A deadly virus reaches the tourist City of Las Vegas. No one is prepared for the casualties or the mass panic it causes. Over a million people struggle to evacuate.
Led by Officer Dave Roberts, a small band of survivors escape to a borax mine in the desert of Death Valley, avoiding contact with the outside world.
The mine, referred to as the Dug Out, is not all it seems. Soon, the underground society rewrites acceptable norms to suit themselves and the circumstances they live in. Communal baths, plural marriages and tribal style punishment councils become the norm. Residents like Delaney Priest and her mother Ashley, soon realize the portal door keeping the virus out is now being used to keep everyone in.
Despite her fears of contracting the killer virus, Delaney stages a heroic struggle to resist the accepted cult mentality and leave the Dug Out behind.

The Dug Out had a great premise but I personally felt it fell short due to lack of character development.A plague has swept across the US and the rest of the world and has now arrived in Las Vegas. The main character is told by her husband, who is a Dr, to take their daughter and leave for Colorado to his parent's house. Unfortunately, she doesn't fill up the gas tank or pack much in the way of supplies and doesn't get very far.
A police officer rescues them from the side of the road and takes them, along with his pregnant wife, to an old borax mine in the middle of the desert to wait out the illness. Others join them and they are ready to wait until the plague dies out. Once there, they lock themselves away and fear of the illness keeps them there.
The most character development was done BEFORE the plague hits and you are left thinking that the main character is a strong woman who will do anything to save her daughter but skip ahead a few years and it is like her wimpy twin took over - where did she go??
To me, there wasn't much character development beyond the first section of the book and that only involved one person so I didn't really feel emotionally invested in whether any of them survived. That part was rather surprising because it is not a short book so looking back, I am trying to figure out why I don't feel like I knew what made them "tick" and why they reacted why they did and I just can't.
Something was missing for me - if you read this book, I hope you are able to find it and enjoy it more than I did.
