"You lied to me when you said you could play chess," Hawkhurst accused.
"Never," Christine responded. "You asked me if I should like to play chess with you. I answered yes, as I would very much like to. You never asked if I knew the game."
Hawkhurst rose, his great height towering above her. He brought a chessboard and pieces and set it between them.
"You--you're willing to teach me?" Christine said.
He smiled and a shiver ran through her. "I should like to teach you many things, Christine. Chess is only the beginning."

Moonlight Masquerade Kasey Michaels Alphabet Regency Romance Book 14 edition by Kasey Michaels Romance eBooks
I'm not all that familiar with this genre of book, so I don't know if it's typical of the Regency Romance or not. It's a mild, quick read, but entertaining nonetheless. The characters are rather cliched: the dark, mysterious nobleman, the down-on-her-luck innocent heroine, the well-meaning elderly guardian, and the know-it-all butler/valet. The two main characters are very loosely based on the characters from "The Phantom of the Opera". The girl's name is Christine, and the man wears a mask to hide some scarring on his face. And there's a handsome man who tries to woo Christine from the other man. That's all the resemblance this story has to "Phantom", but if you're obsessed (like I am) you might want this book just to round out your collection. All things "Phantom" aside, it's an interesting book. Nothing deep or complicated, I'm afraid, just a simple romance story set in the early 1800s. It shouldn't take more than an hour or two to read. The plot is basic: Christine and her elderly guardian (an aunt, I believe) are on their way to London in the midst of a snowstorm, when their carriage crashes and forces them to seek shelter at a nearby estate. The man who lives there reluctantly agrees to shelter them, and they end up having to stay much longer than expected. He stays in the shadows, wearing a mask and cloak to hide the scars from a whipping he received years earlier. Of course, he and Christine fall in love, but things don't go perfectly for them. She must continue to London, and he must try to heal his scars---both physical and emotional. While in London, Christine is wooed by the enemy of the man she loves, and things quickly come to a head between the three of them.
If you like simple historical romances, give it a shot. If I recall, there's no graphic sex scenes, so it's safe for all audiences.

Moonlight Masquerade Kasey Michaels Alphabet Regency Romance Book 14 edition by Kasey Michaels Romance eBooks Reviews
In the beginning I thought this was going to be a beauty and the beast book, but a little ways in I realized it was going to be so much more. Christine and her aunt are stranded in a carriage accident in the country and are at the door of a mansion asking for help. Christine has been injured and the driver of their rented carriage is carrying her. Vincent (the earl) is not inclined to help them and tells his servant, Lazearus, to send them to the village. The aunt is outraged and in fear for her niece's health. She demands to see the earl. He comes out dressed in a hooded cloak and has words with the aunt then sees Christine and mistakes her for a child. He is outraged that Lazarus didn't tell him a child was involved. Poor Lazarus shows them to some bedrooms where the aunt puts Christine to bed. Turns out that theatre is disfigured and has lost the use of his left hand, and basically feels sorry for himself as well as punishing himself for what we don't find out till much later in the story. He discovers Christine is not a child, suffice it to say the story becomes interesting as they develop a romance but the earl sends her on to London to have her season and risk the chance of losing her. The ending could have been a little more developed but Ms Michaels does not lack in writing romance. This was a clean romance!
Poorly written. Maybe a 7th grader wrote it. Plot is so simplimistic. You know the ending at the beginning. No plot turns or
twists to make the book interesting. Not up to Michael's usual writing.
Excellent book I loved it. The love between Vincent and Christine was great. Then Kasey Michael s throws Fletcher in the mix and you wonder if it's going to be a HEA. But when the two men make up you know it's going to be a HEA.
Kasey Micheals doesn't disappoint.
This was a book I bought after I had read many of the other books in the series. I was not disappointed. A fun read. Nothing too serious. It takes you away from your everyday. Moreover, it had a plot! So many of the boks I have read recently have no idea of character development or plot or indeed, an effective ending. Ms Michaels capacity to entertertain is superlative. I know others will enjoy it as much as I have.
This book was definitely not up to standards of other books by this author. It was so boring for the first third I almost stopped reading it but after skipping a bit had to finish to answer the questions about what happened. The speech was much too flowery and the action was so slow.
All of her books are great! She writes with language closer to the time period but without it being too difficult to read. Characters are larger then life, hilarious at times and believable. For having written so many books she does not become boring or repetitive. She always has a new and exciting plot for each book. I'm getting too close to having read all her books and this makes me sad.
